The WORK-IX is a regional Internet Exchange Point based in Hamburg. An internet exchange point allows the exchange of traffic between various Internet service providers and is an integral part of the global Internet infrastructure.
The platform, which was founded by the Hamburg internet provider n@work, is now used by a number of Internet service providers in the region.
Since August of 2007, the world’s second largest internet exchange operator, DE-CIX Management, has been managing the platform’s services. DE-CIX already operates one of the world’s largest Internet Exchanges in Frankfurt plus a smaller regional IX in Munich. The company serves over 350 Internet providers from 40 countries. This includes all leading players in the industry including Google, Yahoo, Sprint, AT&T, Level3 and many others. DE-CIX is developing a new high-capacity switch infrastructure for the Hamburg-based platform, enabling faster connections. The goal is it to establish Hamburg’s WORK-IX as the second largest German internet exchange.
DE-CIX is proud to be part of the process to further improve the telecommunication infrastructure, not only for Hamburg but for the whole region and neighboring countries as well, by operating the WORK-IX state of the art Internet Exchange right in the heart of the city.
