Germany still has no nationwide broadband coverage. Both in terms of economic and a social responsibility, this is not an acceptable situation. Owing to the lower profitability of many under-served regions it is necessary for established providers to invest and attract projects with higher returns on investments.
The promotion of alternative providers is therefore still the best option for quickly reaching a nationwide broadband coverage and to achieve a range of competition. eco in mid 2005 therefore organised a nationwide information campaign ("Road Show") on alternative broadband providers in demand regions. For the period 1st September 2006 to and including 31st July 2007 the nationwide campaign took place, even as part of an assistance project in cooperation with the Electronic Commerce Network supported by the Federal Ministry of Economics.
Currently, eco uses a lot of reources at the political level to advance the emerging competition in the broadband market, hence the widespread location - as repeatedly demanded by the policy. Moreover, eco attempts meaningful approaches for the provision of subsidies, especially so that medium-sized alternative providers can participate.
