eco on US Legislation: In a Free World, Censorship Can Never be Right

A comment on the anti-piracy laws currently discussed in the US, by Oliver Süme, eco Chairman for law and regulation. ‘Piracy must be fought, but not at the sacrifice of freedom of speech, nor market economy. One has to emphasise again and again: blocking the Internet is not the last resort of Internet politics–this would be trivialising the matter.’

‘In a free country, blocking the Internet is wrong, always and under any circumstances, because this throws the doors wide open to abuse. This is a threat to competition and fundamental rights. This is why Internet censorship is a hallmark of dictatorships, not of democracies. And: blocking the Internet is only the most dangerous among many dangerous ideas contained in this law package.’
