Germans online breaks 70 percent mark

For the first time in history, more than 70 percent of Germany’s population is online, according the to latest edition of the (N)Onliner Atlas. Exactly 48.3 million Germans older than 14, or 72 percent, now use the Internet from their homes. In the past two years, an additional two million users have come online, an increase of 2.9 percent. Still, 19 million Germans do not have access to the Internet at home, and 16 million of them have chosen to stay offline due to personal convictions.

While the makers of the (N)Onliner Atlas are glad that the country has topped the 70 percent marker for the first time, they do point out that access to broadband Internet is still problematic. While expansion is slowly proceeding, not even half of the population uses broadband access. DSL lines make up 42.8 percent of all connections, although cable access has seen a significant increase from 3.3 to 4.5 percent of connections. Mobile Internet access remains relatively insignificant at just 1.9 percent, while 7 percent still use analogue dial-up services.
