European Commission: social networks need to improve privacy

A year ago several social networking platforms signed a negotiated agreement to enhance the protection and privacy of young users. The European Commission recently reminded platform operators that some issues persist. According to the Commission, only 40 percent of all online communities have default settings that restrict access to the profiles of minors to their friends.

Viviane Reding, Commissioner for Information Society and Media, said, “If we want children to think before they post, social networking companies should post the right information using the right language. I expect all companies to do more. Minors' profiles need to be set to private by default and questions or abuse reports have to receive quick and appropriate responses. The Internet is now vital to our children, and it is the responsibility of all to make it safe.”
