Government funds fight against botnets

Germany's Federal Ministry of the Interior will support eco's "Anti-Botnet Initiative" with EUR 2 million. The money will be used to set up a help centre where users can get professional assistance in purging their computers of malware. The underlying concept was developed by eco and Germany's Federal Office for Information Security.

It includes a function for warning users whose computers have been identified as part of a botnet by mail, telephone or special notification pages a user would see when starting their browser. "Botnets are among the most virulent threats to the Internet and related infrastructures. Action is needed urgently," said Thomas de Maizière, German Federal Minister of the Interior.
