Internet users continue to report illegal content
The Internet complaint site run by eco and the German association Voluntary Self-Monitoring of Multimedia Providers investigated 5987 complaints in 2009. Complaints were filed by users who came across illegal content online, such as child pornography, displays of extreme violence, or extremist propaganda. The numbers show that the complaint site, part of the international hotline network INHOPE, continues to be an effective tool against illegal content.
Compared to the previous year, there was a significant rise in complaints concerning child pornography, while complaints concerning extremist political views declined. "These results show that the people are sensitised to these topics, and are eager to get involved," says Alexandra Koch, head of the complaint site. "This is exactly what we need, individuals who help rid the Internet of illicit content."
