EU Parliament calls for global Internet privacy standards
The European Parliament adopted a resolution on the EU's planned "Stockholm Programme – An open and secure Europe serving the citizen". The Parliament "expresses its concern about the increasingly widespread practice of profiling, based on the use of data-mining techniques and the generalised collection of innocent citizens' data, for preventive and policing purposes."
Due to the increasing importance of the Internet, the paper calls for "global standards for data protection, security and freedom of speech", asking the European Council and Commission to take the initiative.
