Digital Dividend: Rules approved

The Advisory Board of Germany’s Federal Network Agency has approved of the rules by which new frequencies are to be sold. The board consists of Members of Parliament and representatives of the federal states. New frequencies are to be auctioned in 2010, and cover a spectrum of 360 MHz, including the so-called “Digital Dividend” frequencies.

These were previously used by television stations for analogue broadcasts, but have become available with the introduction of digital television. In the future, these frequencies can also be used to improve the availability of broadband in rural areas. However, not all the auction news is positive. Providers such E-Plus and Telefonica claim they are being disadvantaged by the auction rules.
