Guidelines for Security 2.0

Web 2.0 gives companies new opportunities to interact with the public, but creates a whole new set of risks, ones that can be minimised if users stay aware and follow certain guidelines. However, according to Dr Kurt Brand, leader of eco’s security working group and CEO of Pallas, a “lack of guidelines lets many security managers limit the use of social media for employees, or keep them from using twitter.”

While acknowledging a short-term gain through this conservative approach, they also “risk their company’s future, because social media are gold mines for ideas and contacts.” The goal should be a responsible, targeted use of social media. Clear policies can enable straightforward and secure use, while averting risk.
