More money for “Future Internet”
The European Commission is currently funding close to 100 projects with a total of € 400 million to promote the “Future Internet”, a blanket term to describe the research and development of the next generation of online technologies. According to a statement by Max Lemke, Deputy Head of the Grid Technologies Unit in the Information Society Directorate-General of the European Commission, an extra € 100 million per annum could be made available for similar projects.
There is also discussion of new public-private-partnerships that could draw further investment. Lemke sees opportunities for Europe to perform well in the development of new technologies for mobile computing, online video, and “Open Trusted Platforms”.
