Twitter and corporate communications

“Twitter re-invents the Internet” was the title of a discussion held by eco’s Online Marketing working group, headed by Dr Torsten Schwarz. Schwarz succeeded in bringing together interesting panelists such as Carmen Hillebrand (Vodafone Germany), Thomas Knüwer (Handelsblatt), Mirko Lange (talkabout communications), Nicole Simon (twitter expert and author), and Olav Waschkies (Pixelpark). The more than 50 participants learned about real-world approaches, including at Vodafone, where tweets do not have to undergo a lengthy approval process, with the aid of detailed guidelines implemented beforehand.

Deutsche Lufthansa, on the other hand, follows a different approach. As Pixelpark’s Olav Waschkies, whose company tweets for Lufthansa, explained, Lufthansa does not see Twitter as a platform for two-way communication. “If you have content, people will follow,” he said. When asked if they favoured a formal or personal tone, the panellists diverged. Nicole Simon advised that companies should use twitter in a “personal, but not private manner”.
